Insight
No matter how old you are, you should always be willing to learn new things. Watch and listen to other people and learn from experience.
Being the best is not just a case of being skillful; it’s also about understanding the rules, your role within the team and the use of tactics so as to gain an advantage. You need to be able to make good decisions and act quickly.
At a professional level winning matters, and staying one step ahead of the opposition crucial. The team manager will use all their experience and knowledge to form a winning strategy.
Question for Phil Brown, Hull City Manager
Q. What and how do you find out about your opponents, how do you communicate your instructions to the players, and what do you expect from your players?
A. We find out about our opponents through a company called Scouting Network who provide us with two match reports on the opposition. In an ideal world, one of those reports will be on a home game and one will an away game so that we can see whether or not there is a difference in performance.
Then, on a Thursday morning, I convey to my players via a flip chart two lines about each of the oppositions’ players. In training on a Thursday and Friday we work on both the defence and attack in an eleven v eleven situation. We work out tactics to beat them and work on whatever their strengths are. Things are more-or-less condensed into two days.
An hour before the game when we see their line up, I will talk about any changes to their side.
My philosophy is that you shouldn’t go overboard on the opposition, however you must respect them so that you know exactly what is coming at you. Some players like a lot of information and others don’t like any, but you have to get the balance.
