Playing for Success
The Hull Playing for Success (PfS) project, based at the KC Stadium, is a positive local partnership between Hull City Council, Department for Education and Skills (DfES), Hull City AFC, Hull City AFC Football in the Community (FITC), Hull FC, Hull College and the Stadium Management Company.
The project enables pupils to engage in a range of learning activities within the stadium during a 10-weekly after school programme. The medium of sport is used as a motivational tool, focusing on raising literacy, numeracy and ICT standards amongst 9 to 14 year old pupils, whilst encouraging them to make the most of their time at school and to produce quality work. A strong emphasis is placed on improving pupils’ attitudes and motivation to learn.
The informal learning environment of the stadium and the involvement of the two professional sports clubs have been found to motivate the young people to attend the out-of-school study sessions regularly and increase their desire to improve academically.
The project is managed by Pam Dunwell, Stadium Education Projects Officer for Hull City Council’s Children & Young People Services. Pam has recruited staff from Hull City FITC and Hull FC as classroom tutors. Playing for Success has established itself nationally as a DfES run scheme, in partnership with the FA Premier and Nationwide League clubs and their partner Local Authorities.
